A photographer was assigned to get photos of a forest fire. Because there was too much smoke, he hired a plane so he could fly over the forest. When he arrived at the airport, a plane was warming up near the runway. Excited, he jumped in and said, “Let’s go, Let’s go!” The pilot received clearance and took off.
The photographer looked out the window and said, “Fly over the north side of the fire and make three or four low-level passes.” The pilot asked, “Why do you want to do that?” The photographer said, “Because I’m a photographer and I’m going to take pictures.”
The pilot paused, and asked, “You are not the flight instructor?”
Overcoming and reacting to panic situations
How do you handle panic situations? How do you react when you have a panic attack?
The Psalmist David felt threatened by his enemies. Panic rose up within him. But in those moments he overcame by his faith trust and hope in his almighty and powerful God.
Psalm 31: 13-16 For I hear many whispering,“Terror on every side!” They conspire against me, and plot to take my life. But I trust in you Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.
God loves and wants all of us: the good, the bad, the imperfect, and the flawed part of us. You don’t have to come to him only when things are rosy and sweet. You can and should come when they are also bad.
God does not want us to be anxious for anything. He wants to communicate his peace to us. He wants to calm our fear-filled minds and fill our hearts with his peace – the one the world cannot give nor understand.
Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Battling the fear and dread
When faced with panic situations, the devil can come in through this avenue by magnifying the uncertainty of the decision that we have or are about to take.
He weaves his lies and confuses us just so he could stop God’s plan in our lives. He is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44) so we cannot give in to his deception.
One of the worst things about panic attacks is that it fills you with anxiety and fear because of the uncertainty of when the next episode might be. You are constantly in your head asking: ”Will it happen at work, while I am shopping for groceries or while I am nursing my child?”
Living under this constant dread and fear of when the attack might happen is enough pain to make life unbearable, and so you begin to avoid situations that may cause the attacks.
Now you may say, “How can God hear me when I can’t even talk because of this attack?” The good news is that God hears us when we are under the heavy grip of fear, anxiety, worry, or stress.
He hears even when we can’t say the words. He hears us even when we are saying the words but our mind is flustered with the effect of our episode. Panic attacks cannot stop God from hearing and answering our prayers.
Let Us Pray- Prayer Against Panic Attacks
Heavenly and Almighty Father, you are the one I can always turn to in my time of need, in any difficult situation. Lord, this seems impossible.
But you said, in Jeremiah 33:3, that I should call upon you and you will answer me. Father, I call on you right now to come to my aid. I acknowledge and confess that I cannot do this on my own. I need your help in tackling this episode.
Oh Lord, let your face shine upon your humble servant. Save me from panicking, in your unfailing, undying love. Oh Lord, don’t allow my family and I to be put to shame, for I have cried out to you.
Heavenly Father, my enemies are spreading all types of stories about me. Let their lying lips be silenced, for, with pride and contempt, they speak arrogantly against the righteous. Uplift your servant, and bless my name.
I know that I’m not alone. I will not panic. I shall be calm. Thank you for your Holy Spirit within me and your angels around me. Lord, take away this yoke from me. Let your peace come and fill my troubled heart and calm my nerves. This I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen!
