When God promised to give Abraham a son, he and his wife Sarah laughed at the thought of conceiving, because they were both very old. They were trying to figure out how God was going to do it.

Genesis 17:17. Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”

Genesis 18:12. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

So often, our human minds cannot comprehend how it is possible, even though we have  a word of prophecy, a promise from God or a blessing that we await.

We then start to reason within ourselves, trying to figure out and understand how it would happen. Physically, it may not make any sense.

There may be no signs, no thick clouds, no cosy weather when the Lord says He would send down the rain. So we begin to lose faith in, and lose sight of what He has said.

The worst way to relate to God is by looking at the circumstances in order to believe in His promises. The last time Sarah looked at her circumstances, she gave her husband to another woman, creating a nation without God. A nation outside the promises of God.

Hebrews 11:6. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

It takes faith to please God. You may not see the clouds, but it will rain because the One who said it, is faithful to His words. You may be barren according to the doctor’s reports. But you serve a God who makes the barren fruitful, and puts a song in the mouth of those without child.

You may be ill, or having an infection or tumors, but the God you serve, whose name is Jehovah Rapha, is the greatest Healer. By the stripes of the Lord Jesus Christ, you are indeed healed.

You may not be qualified, but your God has a tendency of qualifying the unqualified for His own glory. Yes, maybe you are laughing like Sarah and Abraham, but, hold God at His word. He will surely fulfill His promises to you, and none of His words will fail.

Do not waver. Keep your gaze on the One who promised. Obey and follow Him till you obtain the promise. Do not settle for Ishmael, your Isaac is coming.

Let Us Pray – Prayer To Quit Trying to Figure It Out

Oh Heavenly father, in my limited understanding, I have been tried to figure it out, to unravel the mysteries of my life, to truly understand my circumstances. I have strained my mind and stretched my thoughts, trying to fathom the inscrutable paths You have laid before me. Yet, I confess, Oh Lord, that in doing so, I have leaned on my own understanding and not on Your infinite wisdom.

Dear Lord, I doubt, I lose faith in You word and Your promises to me.  I consider what is possible and what is impossible.

Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Trying To Figure It All Out

I stagger at Your promises and lose my faith when there’s no natural way possible for Your promises to be fulfilled. But Your Word shows me that everything You have promised in the past, You have fulfilled it, and You have done wondrous things.

You have parted the Red Sea. You have caused water to flow from the rock. You have raised the dead. You have caused a donkey to speak to a prophet and You have healed the sick. You have walked upon the waters, opened the wombs of barren women and given them babies and You have fought battles and won them all.

Oh Lord, I implore You to still my restless mind, to quiet my questioning heart, to soothe my soul that is trying to figure it all out. Grant me the grace to trust in You completely, to lean not on my understanding but to rely on Your wisdom.

Your word in Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Deuteronomy 32:39. ‘Now see that I, even I, am He, And there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.

Submission to God’s Plan

I submit my questions, my doubts, and my fears unto You, trusting that Your plan for my life is perfect. Even when I cannot see the whole picture, even when I cannot decipher Your handwriting, I will trust in You. I will cease trying to figure it all out and will rest in the knowledge that You are in control.

My Lord, today I choose faith over understanding, peace over confusion, and trust over doubt. I relinquish my need to figure it all out and embrace Your sovereignty. I rest in Your wisdom, find peace in Your love, and take comfort in Your promises.

I am confident that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). In the wonderful and most precious name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
