Devotional – Obedience is never easy

Recently I have felt my life taking on a whole new pathway. To tell you the truth it’s a bit terrifying – because you always have to walk in a place that’s new and as a good friend explained yesterday while preaching: new means you won’t know about it from before and it will be different and take adjusting to because it’s new. That’s where obedience comes in!

So that’s what has been happening: the adjusting is hard. Just yesterday, God asked me to do something to which He knew I’d say “no” instantly. Standing up in front of a crowd of people is a daunting thing to me. But guess what, that’s what God asked me to do.

The Fear

At first, fear swept over me. That’s because I had done this before and it didn’t turn out to well. I felt scarred by the experience. Lately though, God brought this situation back to me and I knew He wanted me to deal with it.

But true to my personality I ignored it, as I really wanted nothing to do with it. But, like the gentle Father He is, He would remind me ever so often about it. Gosh, I just had a revelation – He really needed me to get rid of this feeling so that I could stand in front of a crowd once more.

The Holy Spirit

One day at church the message preached had to deal with overcoming your past. Instantly, the Holy Spirit popped this situation into my heart. I decided to ask God to search my heart and deal with the pain, the hurt, the embarrassment of the situation. I asked Him to help me to forgive the person that was involved and release them, as well as myself (yes, I cried my eyes out).

The Holy Spirit is so great. I felt an instant freedom that I knew I needed to have, in order to be a better person and to move on in life.

You see, God knew that He would ask me to stand in front a crowd again. While I was very happy and content to sit in the background and stand with many people as a group, God placed more inside of me. He needed the things He filled me with to come out, so that others could be blessed and His name could be glorified.

Facing The Fear

So there I stood, a bit nervous but with Heaven and my friends backing me up. When I opened my mouth, I felt the nervousness and my legs felt numb, but I continued anyway. Then I felt such calm and I could see God smiling.

So I looked heavenward and continued doing what God had asked me.  Now I understand that God wanted me to do this all along. I just couldn’t, because of the fear I had developed concerning it.

2 John 1:6And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

If God has called you to do something and you’re terrified for one reason or the other, or if you can’t see yourself doing that particular thing, or you don’t have the means to do it now – then trust and obey Him. He’s the one that’s responsible for bringing those things to past in your life. He just needs you to trust Him and obey Him.

Walk in faith and do whatever He has asked you to do. He will provide whatever you need. From training to finance, God has it all!

Luke 11:28 – He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

May God fill you with grace today as you continue in your walk with Him, Amen.
